False. Man U fans sang it first in their terraces in remembrance of the Munich air disaster.
http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/n鈥?/a>Celtic fans sang ';You'll never walk'; alone years before liverpool fans. True or false? Any evidence?
.....and Elvis Presley sang it long before the Kop even knew what it was...and Frank Sinatra before him and the great Mario Lanza before that.....so what's your point?...and is it going to make a lot of difference in your life?Celtic fans sang ';You'll never walk'; alone years before liverpool fans. True or false? Any evidence?
Since someone saw fit to reproduce my earlier answer, I might as well post the rest of it here.
There is overwhelming evidence that Liverpool Football Club supporters were the first to sing this song en masse. The song was famously covered by Liverpool group 'Gerry and the Pacemakers' in 1963. At this time, supporters standing on the Spion Kop terrace at Anfield began singing popular chart songs of the day. The mood was precisely captured on camera by a BBC Panorama camera crew in 1964. One year later, when Liverpool met Leeds United in the F.A. Cup Final, the travelling Kop sang the same song and match commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme commended the ';Liverpool signature tune';. Liverpudlians have been singing 'You'll Never Walk Alone' since 1963. Fully 44 years.
Celtic sang it on one or two occasions during the 1970s, along with several other British clubs, specifically during crucial cup games. Then nothing worthy of note until 1989, when they hosted Liverpool in a fundraiser for the victims of the Hillsborough disaster. Both sets of fans sang it together as a symbol of unity and support. Only in the years to follow - as both clubs repeatedly came together in a series of friendly matches - did Celtic begin to sing it with any degree of frequency, otherwise they have no legitimate claim to the song, nor is there any credible evidence seriously linking them to it. Liverpool can adduce written materials and video evidence. Celtic only supposition and hearsay.
Manchester United supporter Jane Hardwick claimed in 2004 that she, together with friends from the New Mills Operatic Society, decided to sing the song at ';one of the games'; following the Munich Air Disaster as her own personal tribute, before spontaneously being joined ';by thousands of fans'; around her. This would predate Gerry Marsden's faster-paced cover version by five years, if true. However, as one Liverpool supporter scoffed:
';Anyone who has watched/listened to Carousel will tell you that the composition and performance of the musical version with the popular Gerry Marsden version sounds completely different.';
Put another way, Hardwick may have been an aspiring opera singer, but to believe that the Old Trafford faithful belted out an operatic version of 'You'll Never Walk Alone' is patent nonsense. Moreover, nothing is recorded on film or in print media of this most emotional of moments. Her claim remains unsupported and, given the intense rivalry between clubs, deserves no serious attention.
And so in conclusion, Liverpool are both the first adopter and by far the most consistent singers. No other club comes close.

A question was posted similar to this a good few months ago and it became apparent, that the first set of fans to sing YNWA was Man U in the 50s.
Newsreel from about 63 showed Liverpool fans take this anthem up, followed pretty swiftly by Celtic.
Hope that helps.

Buzz may I point out that it was not written by Gerry Marsden but was taken from the musical Carousel penned by Richard Rodgers %26amp; Oscar Hammerstein II, that was adapted from a play written at the turn of the 20th century. What was so incredible about its success was that it had a plot filled with tragedy not seen on Broadway before.
So away with your flights of fancy and think before you splurge your unmitigated bile on this forum.
false!
**** song anyway !!!

And as for the question, I'm not too sure about... sorry!

Oscar Hammerstein II was an AMERICAN writer, producer, and director of musicals for almost forty years. Born in NEW YORK CITY, his father, William, was from a non-practicing Jewish family; his mother, n茅e Alice Nimmo, was the daughter of SCOTTISH IMMIGRANTS!

:)
Don't give a monkeys who sang it first, we sing it the best. Even the Liverpool guys said so when they came up to Paradise. Freely mingling amongst Celtic fans, they loved our YNWA. It is probably the most rousing sight and sound in world football to witness first hand the power of 'Walk On' at Celtic Park especially on a European night.
For once i'm with Wee Shuggy.
False
We sing it best!
BB. Grrrr!...lol

I actually read what Buzz said and thought this sounded ok UNTIL his quote ';THE BIG QUESTION IS WHY WOULD CELTIC FANS SING THIS SONG WROTE BY A LIVERPUDLIAN '; This song was written by Oscar Hammerstein for his play Carousel in 1945 and if anything Oscar Hammerstein's Mum and Dad were Scots who emigrated to the U.S. so why would Liverpool sing a song wrote by a Scottish American yah daft pr1ck
dont know im not that old
Don't know the answer but buzz is wrong in saying that Celtic fans didn't really sing it until 1989.I haven't been to a Scottish football game since the mid 70s,but at that time it was already an anthem for Celtic fans.
Dinnae ever remember a time with oot us Tims singing that.
